Welcome to MacDonald Ranches!

MacDonald Ranches is a Salers and Optimizer composite seedstock provider owned and operated by Bill and Linda MacDonald along with their son, Will, and his wife, Jerilyn.  The ranch headquarters is located about 10 miles southeast of Bismarck, North Dakota on the bluffs overlooking the north banks of the Missouri River along scenic State Highway 1804, so-named for the year Lewis and Clark traveled up the Missouri on their historic voyage.  Our family has been in the beef cattle seedstock business since 1939 and has made a living on the same ranch since Bill’s grandfather homesteaded here in the 1870’s.  You can read more about that in the Ranch History section.

We market 130-140 bulls annually to cattlemen across the country through our annual Performance Power production sale held on the second Tuesday of March each year.  We have held an annual production sale every year since 1972, featuring Polled Hereford genetics in the 70’s and 80’s and Salers in more recent years.  Click here for a preview of our upcoming sale.

The overall goal of our breeding program is to offer genetics that will be as profitable as possible for our commercial customers.  We think the best way to achieve this goal is to have a genetic offering that balances profitable traits for all segments of the cattle industry.  It is our search for genetics that provide a balance of productive and profitable traits that has led us to Salers cattle.  Their calving ease, calf vigor and sensible mothering ability results in more live calves.  Their milking ability and performance results in a big calf at weaning time.  And their fertility, productivity, structure, udder quality and health make them long-lived cows that stay in the herd for years.  More live calves that weigh more at weaning time and cows that give you years of production is the best recipe we’ve found for more profitability for the cow/calf producer.  Their balanced package of profitable traits continues with the carcass, where Salers cattle on average combine outstanding muscularity the highest marbling scores of any Continental breed, as shown by the 2007 Meat Animal Research Center across-breed EPD calculations.  We think that having Salers genetics in your cowherd is one of the best decisions a producer can make to impact the profitability of their crossbreeding program.
