The goal of our breeding program is to provide seedstock genetics that offer a balance of traits that will positively impact the profitability of all sectors of the industry from cow-calf to retail.  Our genetic offering consists of about half high percentage (purebred and fullblood Salers and percentages greater than 75% Salers) and about half Optimizer Composites which are Salers in combination with Angus and Red Angus genetics that are consistent with the goals of our breeding program.

Quiet, workable disposition is a trait that we require in all of our cattle.  No matter how good they may be otherwise, all cattle with questionable dispositions are culled from the breeding program.  This has been our policy since we began breeding Salers cattle and will continue to be in the future.  Although it is impossible to predict how every animal will react in their new home environment once they leave our place, it is our objective for everyone using MacDonald Ranch genetics to have a positive experience in the handling ability and disposition of the cattle they invest in.

It is also our goal for all of our genetic offering, both Salers and Optimizers, to have outstanding maternal traits.  We want every bull we sell to be capable of producing outstanding replacement females and every female to be a good milking, efficient, productive and sensible mother.  That means we pay special attention to milking ability, fleshing ability and udder quality, as well as disposition.

We have invested a great deal of attention over the past number of years in evaluating the carcass trait potential of our genetics.    We have collected carcass data on all of our cull steers and heifers since 1995 and 2008 will mark the ninth year that we have ultrasounded all of our bulls and replacement heifers.   Meat Animal Research Center and other research have demonstrated that Salers are the top marbling of the Continental breeds.  We have used our carcass research to exploit the natural marbling ability of Salers cattle and develop bloodlines that excel in carcass traits.  The result has been that many of the breed's top carcass sires have been produced in our breeding program including MAC BLK LEGEND 26L, the breed's #1 sire for marbling score and MAC BLACK FLORA 6F, the breed's most proven high marbling female.  A unique aspect of our carcass research is that we feed all of our own cull steers and heifers out to finish right on the ranch.  This gives us an opportunity to connect the number data with the experience of seeing and feeding the cattle everyday ourselves.
